...these central categories of yogic study:
Accounts of yoga history vary, but engaging with this history is crucial to understanding yoga's enduring legacy.
The classical yoga tradition is best represented by the Yoga Sūtras and the Bhagavad Gītā. These texts are often the starting place for many modern yoga practitioners.
2. CLASSICAL YOGA
1. YOGA HISTORY
It isn't a study of yoga philosophy without some understanding of the language so much of yoga philosophy was written in – the ancient language of Sanskrit.
3. SANSKRIT
Often most closely related to the Krishna-Bhakti tradition, Vaiṣṇavism is necessary to understand the history of devotional yogic practices.
4. VAIṢṆAVA-Bhakti:
Often referred to as the "Tantrik" tradition, this tradition has undergone a renaissance in recent years and become one of the most compelling philosophical traditions of yoga and meditation.
5. ŚAIVA-ŚĀKTA PHILOSOPHY
6. BUDDHISM
Often neglected as a yoga tradition, Buddhism has a rich history of yogic practices that are sisters to the Hindu practices.
Ayurveda is the sister science to yoga, and many see yoga and Ayurveda as two sides of the same coin – since classical Ayurveda is also built upon the foundations of Samkhya philosophy.
7. AYURVEDA
ABOUT EMBODIED PHILOSOPHY
Why trust what we offer...
Embodied Philosophy is education for the whole human – mind, body and spirit. Many yoga platforms neglect the spiritual and mental training that is central to yoga's philosophy and history, making much modern yoga little more than exercise. Our programming explores the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern perspectives. We believe that a combination of contemplative practice, deep study and a collective cultivation of peace will build a better world.
Practice. Process. Progress.
