Forge a connection between the microcosm and the macrocosm...
From Fragmentation to Integration
This course offers the unique opportunity to . . .
. . . explore the foundational text of Kashmir Shaivism, the Śiva Sūtras.
. . . align ancient wisdom with modern life through non-dual teachings.
. . . study the profound cosmology and practices of Śaiva Tantra.
. . . embody the timeless insights of the Śiva Sūtras in daily life.
The text that is broadly considered to be the founding text of Kashmir Shaivism is the incredibly timely text, the Śiva Sūtras (SS). The SS, which was composed by an author named Vasugupta, is considered by the tradition to be a “revealed” text, or āgama. We will be engaging with this important work as a foundational text of yoga philosophy. This course is for for modern practitioners who are seeking a context of knowledge that helps to situate the experience of individuality within a broader picture of reality.
The Śiva Sūtras provides an inspiring narrative of how one can cultivate meaning in this lifetime in a way that resists being reduced either to familiar modes of religious doctrine or to the assumptions of cosmic meaninglessness that are characteristic of a prevailing relativistic worldview.
Students of this course will learn to:
Course Outline
MODULE 1: The Metaphysics of the Śiva Sūtras
+
In the first session of the course, we explore the non-dual philosophy of Kashmir Śaivism, along with some of its fundamental principles. You will learn about the principles of reality known as the 36 tattvas. You will study the conception of "mind" known as citta – which includes the "I-maker" (ahaṁkāra), the pre-egoic awareness space (buddhi), and the function of mind that interacts with the world (manas). We study these topics while progressing through the early verses of the third chapter of the Śiva Sūtras.
MODULE 2: The Cosmic Dance
+
We continue through the third chapter of the Śiva Sūtras, encountering the expression of reality as the "dancer" through the image of Śiva as Naṭarāja. You will also discover how the practices referred to in the Sūtras cultivate an experience of oneself as a "refined aesthete" (a sahṛdaya). You will study the four esoteric practices of dissolution that correspond to the limbs of the aṣṭānga yoga. You also will discover a little more about the so-called "yogic superpowers."
MODULE 3: Reality as the Word
+
Discovering the 4 Levels of the World helps us understand the methodology of "melting" that is particular to the Tantric path. The highest level of the Word is the vibratory fabric of Reality itself, and our manifest speech is a kind of contraction of that subtle Word beyond the subtlest. The Word becomes an ideal lens to help us make sense of how speech, mantra, and vibration are gateways to the highest possibility of Tantric fulfillment.
MODULE 4 : Illusion and The Cloaks that Bind Us
+
In the final session, we look at the kañcukas, the cloaks that occlude our understanding of the ultimate. We look at the three "malas", which are the fundamental misunderstandings that first emerge from the sense that we are nothing more than an individuated being. Ultimatley, this is an exploration of māyā, or illusion, which in the Kashmir Śaiva-Śākta tradition is not considered unreal, but is instead an expression of śakti – the power of Consciousness.

Tantra enables us to experience this fullness by demolishing the wall that separates our mundane sensory experiences from the spiritual ones. Standing on the firm foundation of unitary consciousness, tantric practices empower us to acquire both bhoga (pleasure), and moksha (liberation) here and now. An integrated approach to experiencing life’s fullness is the reason why tantra evolved in so many different ways—it is simultaneously a purely meditative spiritual path and ritual-heavy practice leading to lofty spiritual experiences.
In this interview, Swami Khecaranathawill discusses the nondual understanding of kundalini as both the individuated expression of the Divine and the means to liberation. This will include a careful articulation of the dynamic relationship between Consciousness and energy, because the power inherent in that relationship is fundamental to Tantric practices that unfold higher consciousness.

Mary shares her personal encounters with Shiva, as she has come to know him over the past 40 years. A sampling of the myths, the poet-saints and the scriptural doctrines of Shaivism are woven within the fabric of these mystical experiences which have helped her understanding of the texts, attesting to their profound and timeless truth. We will hear how Shiva symbolism contains Tantric keys of liberation for seekers of every background and proclivity, and see how Tantric principles are found at the heart of all mystical contemplative traditions.
