"I got so much out of this program. First of all, I really appreciated being exposed to so many of the different perspectives of philosophy that are related to Yoga and philosophy that originated in India – Samkhya, Vedanta, Tantra, Tibetan Buddhism, Goddess traditions – I think we got a great overview. It’s wonderful to learn from teachers who so clearly love their subject . . . Thank you!"

About The Yoga Philosophy Certificate Program

Expand your yoga toolbox and deepen your practice through this extensive overview of the yoga philosophical tradition.

Foundations of Yoga Philosophy provides a comprehensive overview of the seminal texts, traditions, and contemporary concerns that

inform modern yoga practice. Modern yoga may have different goals and concerns than some of the early yoga traditions and yet,

the historical texts and ancient living traditions still have much to offer. Modern practitioners of Yoga are forging a path that unites

body with mind, history with the present moment, and personal practice with social responsibility. This 34 hour program aims

to support this integration by providing the philosophical and practical foundation for a mature embodiment of all that Yoga has to offer.

The program’s curriculum aims to balance a rigorous understanding of yoga philosophy with an embodied engagement of yoga’s subtle practices, including meditation, pranayama, chanting, creative contemplation and inquiry.

Why Yoga Philosophy?

The teachings and practices of yoga are inspiring a deep transformation of human consciousness at the somatic, psychological and spiritual levels. Join us for this comprehensive adventure into the texts, traditions and practices of the yoga tradition.

Yoga Philosophy encompasses a range of texts and traditions, from the Vedas to the Yoga Sūtras, from Vedanta to Haṭha and Tantra. These texts and traditions teach and transmit a range of subtle contemplative practices that support and extend beyond the postural Yoga that is so popular today.

As yoga becomes increasingly popular in our globalized world, the need to immerse ourselves in the foundational teachings of yoga becomes fundamental to protecting the integrity of its most transformative practices.

Why Yoga Philosophy?

In the modern world, these are important facets of yoga that can inspire and uplift an individual’s life. This program offers the next step for those who have glimpsed the transformative insight that a physical practice can offer. It is designed to connect motivated practitioners to the rich history and tradition of yoga and the variety of goals that yogis have pursued over time, from practical health benefits to spiritual enlightenment.

Will I be able to teach yoga after completing this program?

This training prepares students to be able to give talks and workshops on yoga philosophy, but it will not prepare a student to teach the physical postures (known as asana). For this kind of training, you should complete a 200-Hour Teacher Training registered with Yoga Alliance at the RYT 200 Level.

This is a 34 hour Foundations Term which will prepare students for more advanced training in specialized topics, many of which can be found in forthcoming terms including Hatha & Tantra, Contemplative Science, and Yoga & Healing. A combination of these terms will allow for a robust understanding of these topics and the ability to effectively incorporate them into yoga teaching.

Who should participate in this program?

This training would be of quality whether you are a Yoga Practitioner, Yoga Teacher, Meditator, Healer, Therapist, Psychologist, Wisdom Seeker, Contemplative Facilitator, Meditation Teacher, Educator, Massage Therapist or Body Worker, Complementary & Alternative Medicine Professional, Clergy & Religious Leader, Wellness Professional, or a Citizen of Planet Earth Interested in an Awakened World.

Those who lead 200 hour teaching programs may also be interested in this term as a supplement/support to their own teaching curriculum.

Will I receive credits through Yoga Alliance for completing this program?

All Embodied Philosophy courses are eligible for non-contact continuing education training hours with Yoga Alliance. The process for logging these hours with Yoga Alliance is very simple, as all of their continuing education crediting is done on good faith. To put it another way, Yoga Alliance does not require a certificate, a receipt, or any other documentation from you as a student — they trust that you’re being honest with your reporting, and if they have questions about it, they’ll typically just verify your hours with us rather than reaching out to you.

Why should you trust us with your yoga philosophy education?

  • experienced and educated teachers: most of our teachers are either PhDs or lineage holders
  • happy students: over 10,000 people have enjoyed our courses
  • educating since 2015: with the scholar who wrote the most popular translation of the Yoga Sūtras today

When we started Embodied Philosophy in 2015, we were seeking a solution...

We were seeking a platform for yoga philosophy that was both rigorous and accessible, both philosophically deep and relevant to the life of a modern yoga practitioner.

At the time, we observed that the "accessible" yoga philosophy was either too wishy-washy or it was just plain wrong...

On the other side was the scholarly content, which was just plain dry or beside the experiential point of yoga.

Most yoga platforms out there will give you a whole lot of physical practice, but very little for mind and spirit. This is what sets us apart...

Embodied Philosophy is contemplative education for the whole human – mind, body and spirit.

Since 2015, we have been the go-to platform for education in yoga philosophy, mind-body studies, esoteric and contemplative traditions and deep self-inquiry. Our community is a rich and diverse crowd of devoted spiritual seekers, and we would love for you to join us.
