The yoga landscape has evolved dramatically over the past two decades. In a world where there are more teachers than ever before is it possible to have a sustainable career as a yoga educator? Course Outline
MODULE 1: What’s your why?
+
Begin the journey by crafting your yoga origin story. By asking yourself powerful questions you’ll identify your North Star, articulate your why and craft a mission statement that connects your purpose/vision/values.
MODULE 2: There’s only one you.
+
Embrace all of the experiences that make you unique. By understanding that you teach what you need to learn, you will set yourself apart from other teachers.
MODULE 3: Find your people and stay in your lane.
+
Building a community not just a network of folks who can support you and speak your names in rooms you aren’t in. As a yoga teacher students will see you as a leader and ask questions that are out of your scope of practice. Use these opportunities to connect them with your community or identify the knowledge gap as another potential training.
MODULE 4 : Not everyone likes you and that’s okay.
+
The desire to be liked can hinder your POV as a teacher. Discover and ground in your truth as a teacher by connecting your experiences/influences with yogic teachings. What moves you?
MODULE 5: You had a life before becoming a yoga teacher, don’t forget about it.
+
There’s no need to forget your life before teaching. In fact your previous life can inform your approach and provide opportunities for classes and workshops.
MODULE 6: Adaptability and Planning Ahead.
+
Don’t water down your offerings to book clients or gigs. Stand firm in who you are and your students will find you. By ‘dreaming’ about what the future feels like you’ll work your way backwards and discover opportunities are all around.
MODULE 7: Representation matters but don’t pimp your identity.
+
Your identity matters but don’t feel like you have to represent your community. If teaching DEI is a passion, find a training that supports your goals.
MODULE 8: If you aren’t evolving you aren’t living yoga.
+
As your life changes so will your teaching. Injuries and shifts broaden your approach as adaptation becomes a part of your teaching toolkit. If you aren’t re-examining aspects of your teaching style, you may be stuck. Let life’s changes open you up to more opportunities to share yoga with more populations. With the course coming to a close, take time to process the information, review your notes and pull out the salient points. You’ll see that the blueprint to your path is right in front of you.

Ancient Indian stories not only make for gripping objects of study, but also make for excellent means of study. Engaging story secures space for intuitive, embodied, subjective truths, tempering modernity’s impulse to prioritize disembodied, objective truths alone. Drawing from key stories found in The Stories Behind the Poses, this presentation demonstrates the power of ancient Indian tales in facilitating learning.
We have arrived at a great moment to co-create a new space for learning- a space that embodies the qualities and values that are fundamental to healing. I suggest that the teacher-student relationship is a reciprocal one, in so far as a dialogical approach is at the foundation of learning, and propose that it is dialogue which plays a major role in the liberatory function of education.
The Five Limbs of Heart Learning
with Vineet Chander
Reimagine the Classroom
with Nikki Costello
Teaching Tales
with Raj Balkaran
Learning is often conceived of as being rooted in the cognitive or intellectual spheres. But what if we could articulate a pedagogical framework located in the heart-space instead? Drawing from the panchanga-bhakti set of practices developed in Vaishnava Vedantic traditions, this talk presents "heart learning" as an alternative educational model that re-imagines learning as an affective, and ultimately devotional, experience.
